Buenos Aires: opening of the cause for canonisation
of Father José Ramón Aristi
The Buenos Aires Curia
has called for testimonies and documents
regarding the Blessed Sacrament religious, remembered
by generations of the faithful for his spiritual guidance.
The Archdiocese of Buenos Aires has announced the opening of the cause for beatification and canonisation of the Servant of God Father José Ramón Aristi SSS, a priest of the Congregation of the Blessed Sacrament whose reputation for holiness endures amongst those who knew him and received his pastoral care.
The decision was formalised by an edict dated 29 May 2026, signed by the Archbishop of Buenos Aires, Monsignor Jorge García Cuerva, and the Chancellor of the Buenos Aires Curia, María del Pilar Olveira.
Father José Ramón Aristi was born on 9 November 1899 in Zumaya, in the province of Guipúzcoa, Spain. At the age of 13, he entered the Apostolic School of the Blessed Sacrament in Tolosa, where he began his religious journey. He took his vows in 1919, studied philosophy in Belgium and was subsequently sent to Argentina, where he carried out fruitful apostolic work that continued until his death in Buenos Aires on 6 April 1996.
Ordained a priest in 1924, he devoted his ministry to the education of children and young people, to supporting the most needy, and to promoting Eucharistic spirituality. In 1938, he took over the leadership of the Apostolic School of the Blessed Sacrament in the Buenos Aires area, from where he spearheaded an intense evangelising effort in working-class neighbourhoods and founded the Eymard School.
He also held important positions within the Congregation of the Blessed Sacrament. He served as first vice-provincial of the ‘Andino Platense’ Province and as superior of the Immaculate Virgin Mary Province in successive terms, promoting new foundations and the growth of religious vocations.
Confessor, Priest and Spiritual Guide
The edict highlights that, even in his old age, he continued to serve wherever he was needed. It also emphasises that his reputation as a ‘confessor, priest and spiritual guide’ has stood the test of time, remaining alive in the memory of numerous faithful who recall him as an exemplary father due to his profound spirituality and his tireless pastoral work.
As part of the canonical investigation, the archdiocese has invited all the faithful to provide any information that may contribute evidence for or against the Servant of God’s reputation for holiness. Submissions should be sent to the Archdiocese of Buenos Aires, located at Avenida Rivadavia 415, opposite Plaza de Mayo.
Furthermore, the Archdiocese requests the submission of any published or unpublished writings, manuscripts, personal diaries, letters and other private documents belonging to Father Aristi that have not yet been submitted to the postulation office for the cause.
The edict further stipulates that the call for submissions is to be published in the Archdiocese’s Ecclesiastical Bulletin, in the parishes of the Diocese of San Martín and within the various branches of the Congregation of the Blessed Sacrament, in order to facilitate the participation of those who may contribute to the canonical process.
