Northeast Ohio Celebrations for Our Jubilarian Priests

Three of our well-known priests celebrated their anniversaries of being ordained priests this past week. On May 17, Father Norman Pelletier SSS, celebrated 55 years of ordination. On May 23, Fathers Paul Bernier SSS and William (Bill) Young SSS celebrated 60 years of ordination. For our “60-year-olds,” we had a special celebration first at Saint Paschal Baylon Catholic Church (SPB), Highland Heights, Ohio, amid the parish’s annual festival in honor of the patron saint, Paschal Baylon. Principal celebrant Father Paul also preached the homily for the Mass and, being solemnity of Pentecost, highlighted how the Holy Spirit had worked in his life in three significant ways. Father Bill had the pleasure of his sister, Kathleen, joining him for a week of sightseeing in northeast Ohio. After the Mass, all were invited outside under the big tent to enjoy the festival and the special cake that the Our Lady of the Blessed Sacrament Ladies Guild provided with drinks.

On Thursday, May 23, Fathers Paul and Bill’s actual day, the SSS com-munities of northeast Ohio gathered at Regina Health Center, Richfield, Ohio, and the center’s Holy Family Chapel to celebrate a Mass with all the religious and laity who live there. Following this Mass, the SSS gathered down the street at a local winery and pizzeria to honor our men for their service to the church and our Congregation, have community time together, and share beautiful memories of their time and service.

Briefly, we recall that Father Norman, originally from Lewiston, Maine, has taught in our seminaries, was principal of one of our parish high schools (Menasha, Wisconsin), pastor (Chicago, San Antonio, and New York), served on the SSS’s General Administration (Vicar and General Superior for a total of 12 years), our province’s administration (Provincial Superior for 12 years) and editor of Emmanuel. Currently, Father Norman assists in the Center for Eucharistic Evangelizing and SPB parish.

Father Bill, originally from Cleveland, has also served as a teacher in our seminaries and at the Cleveland Diocesan Seminary, Catholic Theological Union, and John Carrol University. Father Bill was an editor for Emmanuel. He served in our parishes (SPB and New York) and, for 12 years, was a chaplain at Cleveland Clinic’s main campus. Father Bill serves in internal ministry in our community, including praying ministry.

Father Paul, originally from Rhode Island, served as a teacher and administrator in our seminaries, at the exact locations of Fathers Norman and Bill, but also in our Philippine province. He also served the Philippine Bishops’ Conference before returning as editor of Emmanuel and served in parishes in New York, Chicago, Maine, and SPB. Father Paul works from Regina, writing and giving talks, usually from Zoom.

We are grateful for their combined 175 years of Eymardian Service and continue to pray for their good health. We thank God for their witness and Eucharistic charism.
